In Search of Lighthouses

Painted Mural
While I was still in the State of Michigan visiting my son and family, we drove over the Bluewater Bridge into Canada. I eagerly handed my passport book to David to get it stamped as we passed through the checkpoint and entered this foreign country I had never been to before. David drove over to the Visitor Center and took pictures of the beautiful landscaped scenes of Canadian Geese and Flags waving in the breeze. As we drove through some of the villages, we discovered quaint residential areas with neatly trimmed lawns and beautiful flowers. Everything was very picturesque and delightful, a sight to hang on to forever. A painted mural of their military on the side of a building caught my eye and we stopped to take a picture of it, then headed for our first lighthouse because that was the object of our travels.

Corunna Rear Range Light

Visited August 9th, 2000

The Corunna Rear Range Light was not exactly what I expected to see and at first glance, I was disappointed. Then as I realized this structure had been built over a hundred years ago of wood, and saved from destruction not once, but twice, my interest grew. We found the tower in the middle of Mooretown, Ontario at the Moore Museum, just off the St. Clair Parkway.

This delightful journey through history wheeled me to a number of historical buildings and of course, a gift shop, where I was pleasantly surprised to find everything accessible.

Thames River Rear Range Lighthouse

On a tip of land near the entrance to Lake St. Clair and along Thames River, the Thames River Rear Range Lighthouse towers 40-feet into the sky in an area called Lighthouse Cove. It was interesting to just look around the area and listen to my son explain the difference in range lights as here, the range light in front of the lighthouse had a triangle shaped red marker unlike those found in the United States that were rectangular. We found a nice restaurant for lunch that was accessible and convenient.

Old Pelee Passage Light

Lakeview Park in Windsor became the final resting-place for the Old Pelee Passage Light when it was moved from its offshore spot between Pelee Island and Point Pelee. The shape of the metal structure was interesting. On the side of the lighthouse was a sign that read as follows:

PELEE PASSAGE LIGHTHOUSE
SERVED AS THE MAIN NAVIGATIONAL AID
FOR THE GREAT LAKES MARINERS
USING THE LAKE ERIE PELEE PASSAGE
FROM 1902 TO 1975

THE LIGHTHOUSE WAS RE-ERECTED
