Built in 1736, the Tybee Lighthouse is one of the first in American history. It is interesting to note that additions began in 1773 with 60 feet and the upper addition of 94 feet in 1867 to achieve the height of 154 feet today. The beacon continues to serve, welcoming ships from around the world into the port of Savannah. It was difficult to photograph the lighthouse in the early afternoon on a Sunday because of other visitors walking along the observation deck. This station is completely accessible and includes a gift shop along with other original buildings. However, unless you can climb stairs, do not plan on a trip to the top.

St. Simons Island Light Station
(1811; 1872)
Operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society

Built in 1872, this magnificent lighthouse stood proudly near the edge of the beach front. My disappointment was in realizing the Keeper's quarters were closed because it was after 5 PM on Sunday by the time I had arrived. St. Simons is located at the end of a beach park. After making a wrong turn, I parked at the beach parking lot and went along the sidewalk to the lighthouse. The first photo shows the lighthouse as I saw it from the walkway next to the ocean. The second photo shows it from the front of the main building entrance.
